Where We Live
Southern Heights History
Southern Heights subdivision was established in December 1952 when Black investors purchased 500 acres from Baton Rouge lawyer Fred Benton, Sr., a friend and advisor to Southern University’s first two presidents. This acquisition aimed to support the university’s expansion by providing housing for its professors and administrators, many of whom were among the first residents.
Located between Harding Boulevard to the north and 77th Avenue to the south, and Scenic Highway to the west and Emile Street to the east, the subdivision comprises 320 homes. Early houses included Crawford Homes, pre-fabricated units from a local manufacturer.
At that time, there were limited housing options for African Americans. The first landowners bought the land and divided it into five-acre tracts, with the City Council supporting the development by installing streets and improvements.
The Articles of Incorporation, filed in 1953, listed 33 men and 1 woman as original owners. The documents included covenants and restrictions to guide development, with designated areas for commercial use and multi-family residences. An Architectural Control Committee, consisting of early residents, ensured compliance with design standards.
As the subdivision developed, it attracted Black professionals—doctors, lawyers, educators, and entrepreneurs—building a thriving community. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, many retired educators from across Louisiana chose Southern Heights as their home.
In 1990, a covenant allowed McDonald’s Corporation to establish a location on Harding Boulevard near Scenic Highway. Today, Southern Heights continues to thrive, evolving to meet the needs of its residents.
